Captains

We salute all the men who have served as Captain.


  Howard Peoples
Captain [1948-1963]
 

Howard was one the founding fathers of the Greater Kensington String Band and its captain for 16 years.  He led the band to 13 top ten finishes and put GK on the path to becoming one of the city's best string bands.

  Mickey Mallon
Captain [1964-1970]

Mickey’s first year as captain he won  2nd Prize and in 1969 he won yet another 2nd Prize. It was in1970 when Mickey won a 1st Prize as captain for the theme “Sunrise Sunset”. However his health forced him to stop parading soon after and he remained active in the String Band Association until his death. Mickey was inducted into the String Band Association Hall Of Fame in 1991.

  Ron Moyer
Captain [1971-1982]


Ron Moyer was captain when the band captured its first 1st place finish in 1979 with "Oz Odyssey".  Ron also has two 1st prizes as captain.  The first in 1976 with the "State Fair" them and the other in 1981 with "And The Angel Sing".  Ron is a Hall of Fame member and continues to be active with GKSB today.


  Bob Dicks
Captain [1983-1986]


Bob Dicks took 3rd Prize as captain in 1983 with the theme “Just Clowning Around”.  Bob also led Greater Kensington at the Colorado Springs Performance where the band was awarded the Championship Marching Band Banner in 1983.  Bob is still active with the band and assists in prop and back-piece making.
  Joe Lippincott
Captain [1987-1990]


Joe Lippincott wowed judges in 1988 taking 2nd Prize as captain while portraying Mozart, leading the band to our second 1st Place finish, “Go For Baroque”.  In 1989 Joe was injured and the role of captain fell to his co-captain. Joe promised to come back as captain, which he did in 1990 capturing another captain’s prize. 
  Scott Moyer
Captain [1990-2009]

Scott Moyer is our longest serving captain, over 20 years. Scott gathered a number of captain prizes including 1st Prize in 2001 for our theme “Tribe with the Vibe”, third prize in 1989 and 3 other 'Top 5' prizes.  He was the prototypical captain; wielding tools to improve the GK clubhouse; hauling lumber for parade props; running fund raisers; recruiting young members and teaching them how build the traditional mummers costumes. 
 

  Jim Tatar, Jr.
Captain [2010-2011]

Jim was the first Captain to perform a routine on Broad Street that saw both feet flying in the air, while wearing a large back piece!  In his first appearance as Captain, before the judges "The Czar" garnered 6th place.  


Ken White 
Captain [2012- ]

Ken's performance in his first year as Captain, saw him carrying one the larger back pieces in the parade.  Built by Scott Moyer, large back pieces have always been a signature of Greater Kensington.
